Owen Davidson began repairing stringed instruments in the Pioneer Valley in 1981. Since 1993, he has maintained his worksohop facility at Downtown Sounds, Inc. in Northampton, where he performs all manner of repair, restoration and maintenance on fretted instruments of all types.
Owen built his first guitar in 1978 under the instruction of Thomas Humphrey at the New School for Social Research in New York City. In 1980, he attended the Guitar Research and Design Institute in South Stafford, Vermont, where he received instruction in acoustic guitar construction from George Morris.
Owen makes a specialty of working on ethnic instruments, particularly those of the lute family including mandolin, balalika, bouzouki, laouto, oud and so on. He also designs and executes custom inlay in pearl and abalone shell, exotic woods, metal and other materials.
